Saul Steinberg Girl in Bathtub

Straight out of 1949 and looking fresh, this bathtub blows my mind. Very rarely do you ever see illustrations presented ‘underwater’, but I’m liking it :) Check out more of Saul Steinberg’s simple and witty work here »

Piet Hein Eek, furniture

I‘m really taken by Piet Hein Eek’s scrapwood collection of furniture, all the excuse I need to start collecting old bits of wood ;) The rest of this guys stuff is all top notch and this shed is two times awesome.

Modern alphabets circa 1864

It’s funny to think that some of these typefaces were ever considered ‘modern’, but also quite surprising how ‘modern’ some of them actually are for 1864! The Modern alphabets circa 1864 was scanned by Depression Press, who has a plethora of empheria sets to check out »

Michael Jackson's Auction

Wacko Jacko is flogging a load of his stuff, it’s pretty old news but still in time for the auction, set to take place in Beverly Hills in April 2009.

It’s interesting to see what someone like Michael Jackson has collected over the years, The Guardian have got some pictures of a small fragment of the 2000 lots. There’s the expected weirdness like the oil painting of him dressed up like a king, the way over the top stuff  like his enormous Gaggia coffee machine. Interesting collectibles like the the prop ‘scissorhand’ gloves from Edward Scissorhands, also some nice normal stuff that I’d quite like to buy like that amazing red fire engine kettle.

The guide prices seem well lower than I imagined – Micheal Jackson’s red velvet cape for only $300-$500? I think not, surely this stuff will go for 10-20 times the asking price.

iPhone Kerning Game

Ha, it’s not quite as dull as it sounds ;) Words with a letter missing are fired down the screen and you have to position the missing letter at the bottom to line up, score points by getting your kerning spot on. Game by and available from – FORMation Alliance.

colour in wallpaper

The online store NineteenSeventyThree have produced a repeating Jon Bugerman illustartion as a colour-in yourself wallpaper! Jon’s illustration style lends itself perfectly to this sort of thing, snap some up at £40 per roll (1000cm x 52cm).

Waitress sketches

Anna Magnowska has collected a load of observational sketches she made of various characters she’s served during her time as a waitress, great stuff.

Field Runners, iphone game

I‘m currently addicted to the iPhone game Field Runners, basically there’s wave after wave of bad guys trying to get from one side of the screen to the other which you have to destroy using various weaponary towers.

The more people you kill the more money you get to build bigger and better towers. Super simple, it mainly plays itself (shoots people automatically) all you’ve got to do is decide what towers and where. You can get quite creative with the tower positioning to make the guys walk as far as possible so you’ve got plenty of time to pick them off.

Before I found Field Runners I was playing a very similar game called The Creeps, which is also great.

Incidently, if you want to screengrab something on your iPhone just hold down the home button then press the power button, screen will flash, job done.

Lucky Stripe t-shirt

This site’s been around for a while, but it’s the first I’ve seen of it – Emptees is a t-shirt design showcase site where people can show off, talk about, and love tees. It looks like the general trend of the community is toward dark (subject noy colour) and highly detailed designs like Garbage Pail kids (not really may taste). But there’s plenty of gems on there too such as – Lucky Strike above and Noopin below.

Noopin

The site was built by Indie Labs, who also make Big Cartel, the pretty handy online store service.

The Mighty Deerstalker

In a month’s time (21st March) it’s another of those eccentric and uniquely British events, The Mighty Deerstalker, held just south of Edinburgh, in and around the town of Innerleithen.

It’s an ”adventure run” with a difference, all the racers are dressed up in tweed :) The Deerstalker is Fun Run meets Fell Race meets Hellrunner meets Tough Guy. You can expect water jumps, log balance bars, prickly tunnels and cargo nets over the 2 distance options of: 5 km (ish) and 10 km (and a bit).

I don’t think I’ll be able to make it up to Scotland for the 2009 event, but maybe next year, looks great :)

Cheers for the link okjerome.

Zara Picken's illustration work

Fresh out of uni with a first class degree in illustration, Zara seems to be getting lots of interesting briefs for her highly textured illustartion style with beautiful muted earthy coulors. It’s a style that I’m starting to move towards myself, so good to see that she’s doing well with it :)

120 ounce steak

Me & Paul ate some pretty big steaks on the CDT, but nothing compared to this 120 ounce monster! Found on the appropriately named - This is why you’re so fat blog, it’s full of many a stomach turning feast such as this pork pirate ship.

While I’m on the subject of monster meals, you should also see  - Mega Munch & Supersized Meals.

Cheers for the link Todd.

Krop - Creative Database

There’s a lot of simple ‘build yourself an online portfolio with minimum fuss’ sites out there, such as Behance and Carbonmade. But new kid on the block is Creative Database by the design jobs site Krop.

I must say, out of all the one’s I’ve tried, this is definitely the easiest to add your own content and the most pleasurable to view a finished profile. Sadly the free version only lets you upload 10 images, for unlimited uploads you’ve got to pay $10 a month

I’ve made a quick (free) page for myself here, but you should check out a pro user with lots of images to see how the scroll bars and image previews really make it a pleasure to use.

Would be nice if they had some way of browsing/filtering all the current users to discover peoples work, maybe that’s coming once they’ve got a few people registered.

    Sean Freeman type treatment

Sean Freeman is knocking out some very tastey type treatments. My favourites are the chopped up charlie Fame and the hairy Elvis pictured.

    Andes traverse photos

Holy crap someone’s actually done a 7,800 mile continuous traverse of the Andes! I’m sure you’re aware of it’s status as the longest mountain range in the world, because of this I’ve dreamed of doing it (along with Everest of course) since I was a kid. I’ve looked into it many times for reference, but all I could find were stories of people who walked the length of South America, on roads… I wanted to find a story of someone had actually walked the length of the mountain range, not the continent.

At last I’ve found it (almost a year after they completed it though)Deia Schlosberg (28) and Gregg Treinish (26) managed to do what I wasn’t even sure was possible. Now I’m hungry to follow in their footsteps - 2012 Paul?

    andes map

I’m surprised that it only took them 2 years (665 days), I’d guesstimated it would probably be at least 3. Although if you look at their route, they seemed to missed a fairly big chunk at the top? Oh yeah, it’s Colombia, probably didn’t want to get shot ! Maybe there’s still time for me to be the first person to do it all :)

Not only were they the first people to backpack the Andes Mountain Range (walk it through the mountains without relying on roads), but also and Deia became the first woman to walk across South America.
