Made in England by Gentlemen -

purple london taxi

Quite excited by this - the other night my flatmate Emeline came home with a London cab she’d been given for free! There it is above, needs a bit of work, but it’s going to be sweet once we’ve got it all ship shape. Anybody know a good mechanic/garage in the Shoreditch/East london area that they’d recommend?

Cardboard party pics

Well our house is just about back to normal now that the last of the party has been moped up and cleared away. I did a really shit job of taking pics, only got a few crappy camera phone shots before and after… Hopefully someone might send me some better ones to post later.

Above is my box of wine, Sachi’s keytar & Nicky’s box of Monster & Munch. I think Ahra’s reporter from ‘Harro’ magazine was probably best costume, had working zoom lense on camera and a spring loaded shutter button!

Update: Ah, Yeevon’s took some much better pictures, here’s a selection. I’ve uploaded all of them to my Flickr.

Giant cardboard cigarette packet

Remember Cardboard Party in 2 days! We haven’t got any decks or DJ’s, so we’re doing the bring your own music thing and borrowing the poke mix CD hat (you have to wear it while your CD’s on). If you’re coming and want to do 15-20min set, burn it onto a CD and bring it along with you Saturday.

That’s Nicky’s costume in the picture, I’ve been tasked with making hers too while she’s suning herself in Thailand! It’s not finished yet, it’s going to be good :)

Cardboard graphics, party flyer, unit 2

We’re having a house party at Unit 2, it’s a joint (belated) house warming for our new housemates Jody & Emeline, and birthday party for me! (I turn the grand old age 31 on the 10th)

The theme is cardboard, accessorise with it, dress in it, draw on it, make of it what you will. No one is allowed to do this, I want to make it. We’ll be getting hammered on boxes of wine from about 8 till late.

Stick it in your diary & hope you can make it :) Cookie.

There’s a drawing game I came across a while ago called eat poop you cat, it’s a surrealist game a bit like consequences and exquisite corpse, but more of a mixture of the two. I don’t actually like the name and have started calling and will refer to it as Cat Eat Poop.

Rules:
Basically everyone writes a sentence on the top of a piece of paper, then passes to the next person. Next stage you have to draw a picture of the sentence you’ve just received, then fold the paper so that the original sentence can’t be seen and pass it on. Next stage you have to write what you think the picture is of, fold then pass on, then draw again etc… Generally you finish when you run out of paper.

I’ve been playing the game at various Christmas meals recently and my belly is still hurting with laughter, it’s such a good game. Going to start posting some of the games, here’s the first one.

First written line: Sachi invents a secret weapon…!

Cat eat poop doodles

Second line: Noodles can kill

Cat eat poop doodles

Third line: People getting killed by Pot Noodles, and Pot Noodles are happy & Partying

Cat eat poop doodles

Final line: Giant snakes from Mars invade planet Earth and they are not friendly!

Note: Generally I think these things are probably funnier when you’re there, but I think they’re great, more to come :)

I was just reading on Asi’s blog his top 10 things of 2007, thought I’d have a go too, so here is my Off the Top of My Mead, Favourite Things of 2007.

Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games music video

1. Music

Of Montreal, album: Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? I first came across Of Montreal through their brilliant music video of the song Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games by Kangaroo Alliance. Really into their catchy bass lines & surreal lyrics.

film poster of Planet Terror

2. Film

Planet Terror by Robert Rodriguez. Non stop zombie blood bath - Girls, guns, guts, this movies got it all - loved every minute of it. Shame Tarantino’s Death Proof wasn’t as top notch (although the ending was genius).

Nad Shot, blog of cartoon characters getting whacked in the nuts

3. Blog

Nad Shot. I love blogs or sites that are obsessively devoted to one obscure thing, well Nad Shot tops the ranks for me. It’s a blog showcasing frames from comics where a character is getting whacked in the nuts. Genius.

Free love and less expensive beer protest sign

4. Party/Fancy dress

There’s been a few good do’s this year, but I think my favourite was back in the begining of the year for my 3oth birthday when we went on a protest pub crawl through london. More info here, and some pictures of the day here. It had everything, all day drinking, armed police trying to arrest us, fancy dress, all my friends and a banging warehouse party at the end to polish it off. Ah happy days :)

Nike vintage waffle racer

5. Stuff to buy

My top purchase this year was my Nike Vintage Waffle Racers in Classic Green. In my opinion, the perfect trainer and I love them the bits. More info on the Nike Vintage site.

Sorry T-Shirt

6. T-Shirt

I love t-shirts, but the one I love above all others is my sorry. t-shirt from Glarkware. It’s so simple, but always get comments from random people, and you can’t fault Cooper Black as the classic t-shirt font.

Poster by Scott Hansen

7. Designer

So hard to pick your favourite, but I think I’d have to go for Scott Hansen, portfolio | blog. I’ve been an admirer of his work for a while, it just so beautifully detailed and rich.

Alex Trochut BA numbers

8. Illustrator

Alex Trouchut, I suppose you could say his work is typography, but I’m in awe of his clean lines and precision work, all of it top notch. Check out his portfolio >

Sachiko Munakata

9. Person

Sachi. I was going to pick my girlfriend Nicky, but she doesn’t have a site yet that I can link to… So instead (and perhaps more rightly so) I’m going to pick Sachiko Munakata. I’ve only known Sachi for 3 years, but we’ve been house mates all that time and she really is a pleasure to live with. I’ve met a few people throughout my life who constantly amaze me and I never tire of, Sachi’s definitely one of them. (Sachi you need to start posting to your blog though!)

FFFFOUND website, tile view

10. Website

It’s got to be FFFFOUND. The site is just so crammed full of good things to look at, it’s hard to go a day without visiting it. Find some good looking things now > (if anyone has a spare invite, could you send it my way?)

Photos of the room to rent and our house

Eleanor has bought a house and is leaving us… £320 a month room available at the end of August in converted factory space in Shoreditch, just off Kingsland Road, right next to the canal (10min walk to Shoreditch center). It’s 4 bedroom, sharing with 2 hirsute English gents and a Japanese girl (smokers). It’s is a great space to live, surrounded by lovely neighbours of similar age and persuasion. We are looking for someone chilled and up for a laugh but also someone who pulls their own weight, does their own washing up but doesn’t live by rotas. The room is like a blank canvas with a double bed, wooden floors and beams - it’s not a huge room but one that you can do what you will with. If you are looking for just a room then sorry that’s just not us. But if you are looking for a friendly house who really enjoy hanging out together then drop us an email.

I rock, you suck t-shirt
Big Shoes, big hands. I don’t understand this one myself, think it’s a girl thing - something to do with a big fanny! But I like it’s ambiguity. Vote!

Big shoes, big hands t-shirt

They don’t seem to going down too well within the Threadless community at the moment… I think they only like t-shirts with pictures on, well I’ve got a some of those coming up over the next few days so hopefully they’ll fair a bit better!

Lyrics from Song of a Page

Very exciting news from Unit 2 :) Our new house mate Nima and his band Hush the Many (heed the few) have their first single called Song of a Page out today, click here to download it from the itunes store. I was going to write out all the lyrics in the song as I think they’d look quite interesting, but I ran out of time on my lunch break… above is how the song starts though.

Going to see them play live tonight at Kings College London Students Union supporting ‘Fields’, you can find tickets here.

Last night I went to ‘Melange‘ (which means ‘Mix’ in French apparently) on the end of my road, it’s a very nice bar that has no concept of licensing hours, but unfortunately no draft lager. We went there to see some bloke out the Guillemots play some improvisational music with his chums. It was quite good (too much whale noises though) anyhow it inspired us to do some improvised/take turns type drawings. We were quite pissed by the time we started, below are our efforts:

The newest member of Unit 2 is Nima who seems really, really nice. He’s also quite interesting as he’s in the band Hush the Many (Feed the Few), you can listen to some of their music on their myspace page. They’re described as “a quartet who operate in that fabled half lit world that exists between classically lined soft psychedaelia and the stranger more enticing and timeless elements of English folk”. Their first single ‘Song of a Page’ is out on April the 9th, you can pre-order it now :)

Hush the Many in concert

This review was very nice:

“I never thought I would say an unsigned band were my favourite band of the moment, but with Hush The Many they really are. I have albums by hundreds of artists but I love this band because when they perform live they move me enormously and make me want to do it all over again. Musically they create some of the most delicate yet passionate melodic rock and love songs I have ever had the privledge and pleasure to experience. I run these gauntlet of emotions at their gigs ranging from tenderness, sadness, peace to sheer joy to be alive. You have an amazing guitarist in Ruban who pulls the most unearthly but wonderful sounds from his guitar, Jo on cello who is mesmerising to watch. Alex on bass who also has a beuatiful but fragile voice. Al on drums adding power to the mix and lastly but so not least - Nima on lead vocals and guitar who writes the lyrics and has to be one of the most charismatic performers I have had the pleasure to watch front a band. I’ve seen them live many times this year and I still get excited going to a gig. How many unsigned bands can you say that about? Go and see them on their next outing, I have yet to meet anyone who has regretted it.”

More reviews here and here. I’m sure we’re going to have some sort of psychedelic house party to welcome Nima properly to the fold shortly. El’s already trying to rope him in to serende her during the day and play live phone holding music…
