We’ve gone on holiday by mistake. We’re in this cottage here.

sleddale hall

The remote Cumbrian farm used as location for Uncle Monty’s cottage in the Film Withnail and I is up for auction next month! It’s called Sleddale Hall and is near Shap (which is near bloody Penrith), the visit Cumbria site has more info. I don’t think it’s been lived in since the 1920’s (when a water utilities company bought it and surrounding land to build a reservoir) other than few Withnail and I fans paying homage to their favourite film.

Farmyard
The place is run down to say the least, love the grass growing in the yard though. But with an guide price of only £145,000 feels fairly cheap to me, well compared to London prices… Great location, I recon you could just about walk straight from the house (early), climb Helvellyn and then be back home before dark. Personally I’d love to buy it, although I don’t reckon the bank will be too keen on the idea. The auction is being run by Savills, although I can’t find any reference on their site, click here to register for a catalogue.

Atomic Coffee Maker

Old Atomic Coffee Machine

Ifirst clapped eyes on the stove top Atomic Coffee Maker on FutureConscious: Philly’s Wish List. Loved the look of it, beautiful curved lines and rugged mechanical utility. I started to look into it a bit and was quite surprised to find vast amounts of info from all sorts of sources. It really seems to be a much loved and ‘cult’ coffee machine. Anyhow fascinating stuff, there’s a quick summary of what I’ve found so far:

It was designed in 1947 by Italian Giordano Robbiati, it stayed in production (not changing a great deal) until 1986 when the factory burnt down. It’s been re-badged by various importers round the world, such as: Stella (Austria), Qualitat (Hungary), Robbiati (Italy), A&MG Sassoon (UK), Bon Trading (Australia), La Sorrentina and Thomas Cara.

There’s a blog dedicated to nothing but the Atomic – Worlds Best Loved Coffee Machine. Or you can buy a whole book about the Atomic – Enduring Design. Maybe you fancy getting a secondhand Atomic, then check out the eBay buying guide. And if that’s not enough, you can get all you will ever want to know about the history, care & maintenance, restoring and making coffee with one from this Atomic Site from New Zealand.

Recently the Atomic has been resurrected as the La Sorrentina Coffee Machine by an Australian entrepreneur (Ikon exports?) who has begun manufacturing a premium reproduction of the Atomic which is a best seller in Oz.

New Atomic Coffee Machine

For us Limeys the brand new models are being imported to the UK exclusively by Atomic Coffee House, you can buy one from their site for £279.

For me the new ones feel a little cold, have a look at some of the beautiful vintage ones for sale here, the worn aluminium casing feels so much warmer and friendly. Shame they’re in Australia though, will be keeping my eyes peeled on eBay until I find a good one :)

Threadless Bestee Awards

Threadless

Igot an email from Threadless at the begining of the year letting me know that my tee Whale of a time was up for their whopping $20,000 Bestee award. Reason enough to encourage you my readers to go and vote I thought, but one look through all of 2008’s printed tees made me thing what’s the point, there’s so there’s so much good shit I don’t stand a chance, who’s going to vote me over the competition…

Well I’ve just been back, on a day that democracy triumphed (Obama was sworn in) no less, to discover that all the really good designs didn’t make it and the 20 finalists, in my opinion are a sorry state indeed. What’s going on here, do the public really think that these 20 designs are the best Threadless have produced last year? I think not, there must be some heavy campaigning going on to get these designs voted for by people with no clue and who probably don’t give a shit. Hang about, that’s pretty much how the  elections work as well isn’t it ;)

Well if you haven’t cast your vote yet, I’d recommend – Bye Bye Apocalypse by Budi Satria Kwan, a very clever bit of skull art.

Peter Grundy

Peter Grundy

Just been looking through Grundini, the online portfolio of Peter Grundy. A lot of the work feels familiar then I read he’s been doing his stylised infographics, illustartion, art and type since 1980 and still going strong. Made me think about the future of my career and where I’ll be in 2030?! I’ll I hope I’m still designing and drawing, and I hope that it’s as good as Peter’s work! Anyhow, be sure to check out his hi-res downloadable book.
