We Came First!

a man spunking all over a womans back, the caption reads: We Came First

Just found out that Zopa won the Webby for banking, well done POKE and to project buddies Nik and Iain (creative direction) and Dom (design). Just having a look over at their site though, I feel they’re starting to stray away from our lovely templates, not sure I like what they’ve done to the homepage… ah who cares, if you go have a look at some of the comments about it on the webby site their seems to be a lot of people who really like the site. Oh. I don’t think you can see the comments anymore, so you just have to take my word for it.

David Gest’s Blog

Screen grab of David Gest's Blog

David Gest’s blog has just launched. It was another fun POKE project, basically the brief was to make something a bit bonkers and fun! I was responsible for art direction, design and illustration, and had a lot of fun with the look and feel of this one. The reason for it existing is he’s got a new reality TV show on ITV shortly, and it’s purpose is to advertise that, but hopefully David might keep adding things to it after the show finishes. Most of the content is video clips of David and his bizarre behaviour, some of it is very funny indeed.

If you like the look of the site you can download a desktop of the tiled background I made for the it here.

POKE Weekender

Bit of a late post, but I’ve been waiting for everyone’s photos to be uploaded. Last weekend we went away on POKE‘s annual piss up in the countryside, we ended up in Plas Glansevin Georgian Mansion near llangadog in the Brecon Beacons, Wales. We had a very pleasant time, consumed spectacular amounts of alcohol, climbed Pen y Fan the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons and most dangerous in Wales! Anyhow, here’s a selection of photos:

Compilation of photos from the POKE weekender

For further amusement, check out Farnhill‘s, Tom’s, Mark’s (probably the most comprehensive) and Igor’s flickr sets. Finally don’t miss the infamous Gor Dance, note this was film at about 7.30pm on the first evening!

Cock-a-doodle, Design Week Awards

Design Week Awards Cock-a-doodle

Cock - a - Doodle Award

Cock-a-doodle was digital design winner at last nights Design Week Awards. We weren’t expecting to win at all (well it is a site all about drawing cock), and were totally chuffed and blown away to pick up the award. A good night had by all, and POKE‘s first award of the year. How many times do you reckon I can say ‘cock’ in an interview? Click here to find out in an amusing podcast (Fast forward about 3/4 of the way through).

Benidorm

Solana Apartments

You may of seen my previous posts about a Johnny Foreigner character, well the site ‘Solana Apartments‘ they were created for has gone live now. Make sure to check out the Currency Converter and changing the language options in the top right hand corner. It’s our first site at POKE for new client ITV, promoting their new comedy series ‘Benidorm’. Probably worth watching because of Johnny Vegas alone. Creative by Nathan, beautifully bad design by Nico, and I did the illustrations for the phrase book and the ads soon to be appearing on a site near you.

The Malice Box

The Malice Box

This is a project I’ve just finished at POKE. It’s a site for the publisher Penguin, to promote a new book coming out called The Malice Box. The book is a bit like the Da Vinci Code – a dude runs about the place, solving puzzles and saving the world. In the book he has a GPS device called ‘The Quad’ to help him get around. For the online game we created, you get to navigate the globe using google maps. Basically you solve puzzles, guess locations of ‘Red Gold’ on the map and win prizes. Go check it out and play the game and at www.maliceboxquest.com/

Also see what Tom and Iain have to say, who also worked on the site.

Mob Mates

Mob Mates

Mob Mates is a project for Orange that I’ve been working on at work for a while now… It’s an interesting offer, basically it’s a standard PAYG SIM, but the calls and text between people also on Mob Mates are only 2p. The site’s been created to help people build up a calling circle and spread the word to their friends because you only get the cheap rates if all your mates are on the same tariff. We were given a bit of leeway with Orange’s brand on the site as they were aiming the offer at a young audience and their corporate guidlines didn’t go down too well with that demographic. Mysterious Al did all the little characters dotted about the site, when you sign up you can create characters for all your mates, then produce a load of dynamic content using them to download or stick on your blog/myspace etc… Knotty coded the site, there’s some lovely ajax touches in there, I was amazed how he’s got it compositing loads of graphical variables and outputting it all as animated gifs, desktops etc… Kester held the whole thing together and I did the design.

Cock-a-doodle

cock-a-doodleSometimes you get to do a site that you were born for, this was one of those occassions! Collegues at work got a bit worried about me for a while as they came past my desk to find me buried beneath piles of cock drawings… But it was a lot of fun, so you should check it out: Cock-a-doodle has been up and running now for over 6 months and has already got thousands of hand drawn cock in the doodle bank, but there’s plenty of room for more. Knotty has just updated the code, so it’s now running much smoother than ever. Remember it’s for a good cause – to safe guard your balls – so after you’ve doodled your dongs, head over to our everyman sponsorship page to make a small donation.
